Take two and...

When you're a kid and you get really sick, there are only a few big things to worry about: going to the doctor, maybe getting a shot or some icky meds to take, missing school - which isn't so bad until you have to make up all that homework - that's about it. Mom and Dad take care of the bringing you soup and meds.

But when you're grown and you get really sick, you have to go to the doctor, maybe get a shot and definitely get some icky meds to take, miss work - which is bad because you have to make up all that work and take your sick days or your vacation days if you've used all your sick days - and you take care of everything else. You have to get your prescriptions filled and wait on them at the pharmacy. You have to buy your own soup, etc., at the store and then fix it for yourself when you get home, no matter how lame you feel. It's up to you to make sure you take your meds on time and finish them up like you should.

There's just a lot of things they don't tell you when you're a kid. You learn, though, when you're waiting on your meds at the drugstore and thinking about all the times Mom and Dad must have taken care of this. Just because.

Remembering

Five years after September 11, the newsroom today is hauntingly quiet. Five years ago, it was chaos in here.

It's five years later. It's September 11, 2006.

Remember.

So Southern

"Girl, you are SO Southern," Mia said to me when I visited her in NYC back in July. I'd put my handbag outside the restroom stall at Yankee Stadium - like, just for maybe a minute - while handling personal affairs. I usually do this, hurriedly wash up, then retrieve my bag and head out. Mia watched me engage in this wee ritual, shaking her head.

"What?" I asked. I really didn't see what the big deal was.

"This is New York. You don't leave your purse anywhere."

She has a point. After all, it's her town. She lives there; I don't. But I've been to NYC many times and while I've heard all the bad things and I know that they happen, it's weird. My NYC experiences have all been pretty good and I trust the people there. Besides, I was wearing Yankees gear. I was among friends, right?
